Overview

What is Trademark Registration?

A registered trademark gives you the exclusive right to use your brand name, logo or slogan for the goods or services it is registered for, and the legal right to act against anyone who copies it. Trademarks are registered by the Trade Marks Registry under the Trade Marks Act, 1999.

You can use the ™ symbol once your application is filed, and the ® symbol after registration. A registered trademark is valid for ten years and can be renewed indefinitely.

Timelines vary based on the Registry’s examination, any objections or oppositions, and publication. Unopposed applications typically take several months or more.

They can be filed as separate applications for broader protection, or together as a combined (device) mark. We advise on the best approach for your brand.
